Why This Matters

Mental health challenges are rising in every age group — youth, adults, and seniors.
With the right knowledge and skills, anyone can:

  • Listen and respond without judgment

  • Offer practical help

  • Support recovery and resilience

Who Can Participate

We’re training up to 100 Los Gatos residents or people who work with Los Gatos schools, seniors, or community organizations, including:

Adult MHFA Track

  • Seniors 55+
  • Caregivers
  • Volunteers supporting adults or older adult

Youth MHFA Track

  • Teachers

  • School staff (counselors, administrators, coaches)

  • School volunteers

All trainings are free, funded in part by a community grant from the City of Los Gatos. No prior experience required.

What You’ll Learn (Adult Training)

  • How to identify mental health and substance-use challenges

  • Early, worsening, and crisis signs and symptoms

  • A 5-step action plan for crisis and non-crisis support

  • How to approach conversations about anxiety, depression, psychosis, substance use, and suicide

  • Self-care strategies and tools for resilience

  • How to support coworkers, neighbors, and community members who may be struggling silently

  • Skills for talking with older adults who may experience isolation, memory concerns, or stigma around mental health

What You’ll Learn (Youth Training)

  • How to identify mental health and substance-use challenges

  • Early, worsening, and crisis signs and symptoms

  • A 5-step action plan for crisis and non-crisis support

  • Self-care strategies and tools for resilience

  • How to support students, teens, and young adults experiencing stress, pressure, or emotional overwhelm

  • What to do if a youth shows signs of self-harm, withdrawal, or sudden behavior changes

  • How to engage youth in a way that builds trust and reduces shame

  • Full-day or two half-day training, in person or virtual

  • 5–30 participants per training

  • A 48-page Participant Guide

  • A 234-page Adult MHFA Manual or A 286-page Youth MHFA Manual

  • Completion certificate recognized nationwide
